Who are you?
Hello, I am Penelope Christine James-Sabastian. My birthday is December 29, 1983. I am an Amish/Modern Mennonite woman.
Where are you from?
Holmes County (Millersburg), Ohio.
You said you’re Amish? Then why do you have a computer? And you can be both Amish and Mennonite?
Haha, well in my Rumspringa I was introduced to technology (I have a laptop, cell phone, and TV set in my home) and I haven’t parted with it since. Even though my religon forbids it, I believe you can use technology and still worship God correctly by doing so. And yes, I consider myself both Amish and Mennonite. I was born and raised Amish, but I have adopted some of the Mennonite’s beliefs also.
Are you married?
Yes! I have a wonderful husband named Joseph Andrew Sabastian. He’s handsome and intelligent. Joseph and I found each other using an Amish online dating service (www.amish-online-dating.com) back in the summer of 2010. We only dated a few months and then we got married! 🙂 It was pretty awesome. Also, Joseph is a carpenter. He owns two carpentry stores.
I used to be married to Charlie Cole during my Rumspringa years, but we divorced a while back. He’s now married to a woman named Kat and she has a daughter named Julie (who attended my schoolhouse for a short time). I’ve also heard Charlie and Kat recently had another baby. The cause of our divorce was that Charlie blamed me on our infertility, but I later found out it had to be his fault because I got tested for it and I was negative.
Do you two have children?
I have a boy, Joseph “Joey” Andrew Sabastian Jr. 🙂 He was born on January 13, 2012, sharing his father’s birthday. We are not planning on having any more for a while, but I definitely want to have lots of children like traditional Amish families.
Who are your parents?
Jedidiah Sr. and Daisy James, however Poppa just recently passed away on May 10, 2012, due to a bad heart. He kicked the bucket peacefully in his sleep. Since then, Momma has sold our childhood home and built on a Dawdi Haus to my brother Jedidiah Jr.’s house. A Dawdi Haus is basically an addition to a house for in-home elderly care for one’s parents… to keep them close in their older age.
Where do you work?
I am an Amish schoolteacher at Indian West Amish School. I teach grades kindergarten though 8th grade (Amish kids only get schooled through the 8th grade unless they decide to go to high school and college, which is extremely rare). Also, Joseph and I own a store in Portland, Oregon. It’s called “The Wagon Wheel – Amish Furniture and Clothing”. So, in the summers and during school breaks we go back to Oregon to work and check up on things. (However, due to my poppa’s death, I am not there this summer). During the school year, I mail stuff to sell at the store. My biggest seller is bonnets, and I have to constantly make them.
Who are your siblings?
Me – Eldest age 28
Jedidiah – age 24, 2nd eldest with a wife Sarah and children named Andrew, Elizabeth, Cassandra and baby Trevor
Samantha – age 18, 3rd eldest, divorced from Jimmy, and has twins named Grace & Gloria, born on March 17th, 2011.
Paul – age 16 and the youngest of all of us
What are your hobbies?
I quilt, sew, knit, and crochet religiously. Since I sell what I make at the store, I have to do it all the time. It doesn’t bother me. I love it! Not to brag, but I’ve been told before I have a knack for picking out colors that go together to make a beautiful quilt or shirt.
I also like to go on horseback rides. We have a female and male horse at our home.
*P.S.: Paul and Samantha currently live in the Sabastian’s home. Samantha, because she just got through the rough process of divorce and doesn’t have a place yet. Paul, because he just came home from living in Portland, Oregon to be with his girlfriend Bonnie (they didn’t live together) and didn’t want to be a bother in the whole move from their old house to the new Dawdi Haus. Penelope does not mind them living with her.*
